CROHN’S DISEASE
Crohn’s disease is a disease that primarily affects the digestive tract but can manifest as inflammation of other organs such as eyes, joints etc. Although widely regarded as an autoimmune disease, evidence now suggests that Crohn’s is more infection driven than an autoimmune response.
Bacteria believed to be responsible for the inflammation is Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis which causes Crohn’s like inflammation in bovine (cows) and has been isolated in patients with Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease is most commonly characterised by diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bleeding although other symptoms may manifest such as joint pain, fatigue, etc.
Crohn’s disease is diagnosed using a combination of endoscopy, blood tests and histology tests. While standard Crohn’s treatment focuses on treating the symptoms, anti-MAP focuses on eradicating the infection causing the inflammation, the combination therapy consisting of several antibiotics and anti-mycobacterial drugs.
