Helicobacter pylori infections
Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans. H. Pylori infection is responsible for up to 95% of duodenal and 75% gastric ulcers and has been associated with the development of gastric cancer and lymphoma.
Symptoms can include indigestion, vomiting, burping, loss of appetite and burning pain in the upper region of your abdomen.
Diagnosis is conducted through a panendoscopy where tissue samples from the stomach are collected and tested for the presence of the bacteria or a breath test, where samples of exhaled breath are collected and tested for the breakdown products of the bacteria.
Treatment deals with eradication of the bacteria from the stomach using a combination of medications that aim at lowering the acid in the stomach, eradicating the bacteria and allowing any present ulcers to heal. Treatment combination offered is usually a combination of antibiotics and a proton-pump inhibitor (an acid lowering drug), over a specified course of days.
