PARASITE INFECTIONS
Parasite infections from Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis are often misdiagnosed as they are often present in patients with no symptoms. However symptoms such as diarrhoea, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headaches and depression often disappear once these parasites have been eradicated.
These parasites can cause up to 50% of IBS-type symptoms. Diagnosis is made through a stool test that has been specially fixed and stained for the presence of these parasites. Patients can then be treated with a combination of various drugs over a specified course.
