Proctitis /Distal proctitis

Proctitis, a sub-group of ulcerative colitis, refers to inflammation restricted to the anus and the lining of the rectum and characterised by diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, straining during defecation and anorectal pain.
Proctitis is usually diagnosed through a colonoscopy, biopsy tests and stool tests to eliminate other infective causes. Treatment usually takes the form of immunosuppressants, long term steroids and 5ASA compounds which have varying degrees of success.
A new treatment consisting of acetarsol has shown to be effective in reversing inflammation of proctitis when used twice daily over a specified period.
